Vardenafil, also known as Levitra, is a medication that belongs to a group of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors). This medication works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels and increasing the flow of blood to certain parts of the body.
The most commonly reported side effects of Vardenafil include headache, flushing, indigestion, and nasal congestion. Serious side effects of Vardenafil may include sudden vision loss, hearing loss, chest pain, and prolonged erections. It is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following serious side effects: chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the ankles or feet, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, increased heart rate, or other unusual changes in your blood pressure. You should also let your doctor know if you have a rare inherited eye disease, a rare inherited eye disease that affects the blood flow to your eyes, an eye condition that causes sudden decrease or loss of vision, an eye condition that causes sudden loss or decrease in hearing, or a condition that may affect your digestive system, such as a condition called a blocked esophagus. Vardenafil can also lead to serious side effects if you take other medications that affect the way the drug works or if you take certain types of drugs that interact with Vardenafil. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Vardenafil and contact your doctor immediately: vision changes such as blurred vision, sudden vision loss, decreased light sensitivity, decreased hearing, or problems with the eyesight. You should also let your doctor know if you have a rare inherited eye disease, a rare inherited eye disease that affects the blood flow to your eyes, or an eye condition called anoikis, an eye condition that causes sudden decrease or loss of vision. Vardenafil can cause serious side effects if you take other medications that affect the way the drug works or if you take certain types of drugs that interact with Vardenafil.

As with all prescription medications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you currently manage. Tell them about any and all medications, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with Levitra. Levitra can interact with bodily substances, causing potentially serious adverse reactions.
Do not take Levitra if you take nitrate medications such as isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, and nitroglycerin. It’s important to inform your doctor if you are taking any form of high blood pressure medication, alpha-blocker medication, prescription antifungals (like fluconazole), or other medications for erectile dysfunction. You should include information about herbal products, especially St. John’s wort.
Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Levitra.
Talk to your health care provider about safe drinking practices during treatment with Levitra. Levitra can interact with alcohol and cause potentially serious adverse reactions like those above.

Health officials across the country are warning consumers not to purchase or use Levitra despite the drug’s status as a first-line medication for erectile dysfunction, a new study finds.
The findings come just three weeks after it was discovered that Levitra may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes among men with high blood pressure.
“The research is interesting and alarming,” said Dr. John P. Mieler, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic who did a study of Levitra. “It’s very concerning.”
The FDA approved the drug Friday, May 1, to treat erectile dysfunction in men under 40.
But the drug is not a cure, and some physicians who treat patients with the condition said it could be linked to other heart conditions, including the one that caused the deadly disease in 1998.
The study looked at 1,000 patients who had taken the drug, compared them with patients who did not, and found that a small percentage of them suffered heart attacks and strokes, especially those who had low blood pressure.
The drug’s effects on blood vessels were similar in patients who took Levitra but were not taking the placebo. Doctors did not recommend it for heart disease, but a large study of people taking the drug found no evidence of cardiovascular disease.
But the study found that users of Levitra were less likely to experience side effects, such as a heart attack or stroke, compared with patients who were taking a placebo.
“It’s a very dangerous drug that should be taken seriously,” Mieler said. “If you’re taking Levitra for a heart condition, it’s very dangerous to be taking this medication for the first time.”
The results come just three weeks after the FDA approved the drug for erectile dysfunction, which has become a public health problem in recent years. The drug has been linked to heart attacks and strokes.
The FDA’s stance on the drug was that it was not intended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and would not affect patients who have previously used nitrates.
It’s not known what effect Levitra may have on those other heart conditions, and the FDA isn’t making any recommendations about whether to approve the drug.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company and is part of a larger study that will be presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
Levitra, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, was originally developed to treat pulmonary hypertension.
That drug was FDA-approved in 1998 and has been approved since then for several other heart conditions, including angina, chest pain, and high blood pressure.
A new drug, called Nitro-Dur, is being developed to treat erectile dysfunction.
A new study in The New England Journal of Medicine found the risk of heart attacks and strokes was about twice as high in Levitra users than in those taking the placebo.
The study did not find any link between the drug and the risk of any of the other conditions studied, said Dr. John M. McInnes, a heart specialist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “There is no evidence that nitrates are associated with these events,” he said.
The men taking Levitra also had a lower risk of cardiac events compared with those taking a placebo. But men who took Levitra had a slight increase in the risk of a heart attack or stroke, while those who took the placebo had a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke. (A separate study of the men found the risk of heart attacks was even higher among men who took nitrates.)
Dr. David Farrar, a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins University, said the findings were encouraging.
“The study did not have strong enough control groups to control for confounding factors that might have influenced this result,” he said. “We wanted to provide a baseline for those patients to be evaluated.”
Peter B. Kastelein, a professor of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic, said he doesn’t think the study’s findings are alarming.
“In this particular study, we don’t have a control group, and we don’t have a control group,” he said. “And it’s not clear that Levitra is associated with any cardiac events.
